This type of knowledge should be offered in postgraduate studies because it is when graduates in this field, especially those working in public health, have hypotheses and data to test, and therefore their motivation and environment are optimal for assimilating statistical and design concepts that are traditionally difficult for undergraduate students.
Our group, and the UAB, are pioneers in Spain in this type of teaching. We started in 1977 with a distance course in Biostatistics that was complemented with two face-to-face stages and a final exam at the Bellaterra Campus. The knowledge of the students who passed the evaluation was accredited with a diploma signed by the Rector of the UAB.
These studies were consolidated in the public health field in Spain. During this period, complementary courses in advanced statistics, computer tools, and statistical packages were added, the latter taught in person at the former Laboratory of Mathematical Psychology, now the Laboratory of Applied Statistics and Modeling.
In the 1993/94 academic year, the Graduate School approved the diploma in Statistics in Health Sciences, so that students, depending on their needs, could choose the different courses of the Program individually or enroll in the complete Diploma, which consisted of mandatory and optional modules.
In the 1999/2000 academic year, the Graduate School authorized the master's degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences, which was taught until the 2021-2022 academic year, so that students, depending on their interests, could choose the different courses of the program individually, complete the diploma, and, once the diploma was obtained, continue to obtain the master's degree. For the master's program, Professor Miguel Delgado, Chair of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, who is one of the main Spanish experts in health designs, was incorporated.
The current continuing education program is now a reference in Spain, as evidenced by its long trajectory and the high number of enrolled students.
The motivation of most of the currently enrolled students is to achieve good methodological training to join an applied research team and/or complete their doctoral thesis.
Career opportunities
Essentially, it allows accreditation of methodological competence in order to applied research centres and groups within the health sphere.Second, these skills are highly valued by the pharmaceutical industry and other companies within the healthcare sector.
Internships
UAB masters and graduate diplomas may include or facilitate external academic internships in companies or institutions in order to help the student to achieve a level of expertise that facilitates the insertion or promotion in the workplace.
For this study programme non-curricular (optional) internships are possible:
- Non-curricular
As a UAB student, you have access to the University occupation portal, the Occupability Service, through which you can participate in selection processes for non-curricular practices as well as getting a contract. In both cases, you need to sign up to the Nexus application.
