This microcredential is aimed at individuals in the field of formal education, such as primary school teachers or secondary education faculty, artists, and also anyone who, at different moments in life, is interested in artistic creation and in the knowledge of artistic and cultural heritage. People who wish to approach environmental awareness and live a life that is mindful of the nature we are part of, through research and artistic creation. Inspired by the theorist, educator, and activist Yayo Herrero, this training is centered around the idea of "educating for the sustainability of life".
Situated in a natural environment, we activate introspective journeys, actions of active landscape recognition, and engage with theoretical knowledge to ultimately approach the formalization of an artist's book.
This microcredential course is presented as a creative laboratory where nature is the workshop, using art as a tool to foster environmental awareness and work on various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as inclusive education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), reduction of inequalities (SDG 10), climate action (SDG 13), and biodiversity protection (SDG 15); all while recognizing that we are an integral part of nature, and promoting active, collective, and creative methodologies that connect us with the planet and inspire sustainable practices through education and art.
The proposal is structured around three axes, which correspond, in essence, to the cycle of a seed: nourish, germinate, and disseminate.
The first phase, called nourish, is developed through an action-research framework. Participants approach nature through their sensory memory and bodily experience, engaging in introspective dynamics, active observation of the environment, and collective readings. This initial process involves collecting samples from the lived environment and creating a sensory archive.
The second phase, called germinate, involves a theoretical approach through readings and viewings focused on the concepts of inhabitants, habitat, biosphere, and the relationships between nature and culture, which are essential for developing a biodiverse consciousness. Additionally, there will be an introduction to the artist's book. Based on this theoretical and research work, participants will construct or identify micro-narratives around these concepts and conceive art as a tool for critical thinking in relation to the proposed themes, through situated knowledge.
The third phase, called dissemination, builds on the sensory archive created in the first phase and the micro-narratives or definitions developed in the second phase. It is a creative phase, during which resources are acquired to project critical thinking through art, ultimately generating a practice focused on creating an artist's book related to the explored themes.
This microcredential is framed within our current reality, recognizing that as a species we inhabit planet Earth by building coexistence structures centered on the individual, rather than as part of a planet where humanity coexists with other animal and plant species. We feel-think that both locally and globally we face a reality where individual and governmental action is vital. Therefore, the Laboratory, through research actions and artistic practices, seeks to encourage participants to foster individual and collective actions through active observation of nature, to embrace multi.species awareness, and to generate counter-narratives that bring us closer to planetary consciousness.
- Dynamics for knowing and exploring the natural environment.
- Educating through the arts: methodologies of exploration and action-art research.
- Recording and documentation of action-research processes.
