Surgery of the hand and the upper limb is a sub-specialty of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology. For the day-to-day practice of this surgery, there is a need for theoretical and practical knowledge of the upper limb in particular, and also of anatomy, surgical entry paths, osteosynthesis, arthroscopy, cutaneous coverings and microsurgery.

This knowledge is acquired over many years of study in different centres and from specific courses on osteosynthesis, arthroscopy, microsurgery etc. The Master's Degree in Surgery of the Hand and Upper Limb aims to help students in systematically building up the skills and expertise they need.

The master's degree is made up of two graduate diplomas: one on surgery of the shoulder and elbow, and the other on surgery of the wrist and hand. The aim is for students to acquire greater knowledge, competences and skills in this sub-specialty.

The sub-specialty in surgery of the hand and upper limb provides the essentials for carrying out the usual techniques, and equips its students with the knowledge of theory needed to take the European Board of Hand Surgery Diploma examination of the European Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH).

Career opportunities

This master's degree provides the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to pursue the sub-specialty of surgery of the shoulder and elbow and surgery of the wrist and hand, provided the student has undergone specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology or another surgical specialty, within the Spanish national health system or that of another country.

This master's degree equips its students with the knowledge of theory needed to take the European Board of Hand Surgery Diploma examination of the European Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH).
