Master's Degree in Nursing Care for People Affected by Burns and Chronic Wounds: A Comprehensive Approach
IntroductionAlong with chronic wounds, burns are a very common problem and represent a notable health problem from all aspects, epidemiological, economic and, of course, with respect to the direct impact on patients’ quality of life. These pathologies are treated at all levels of care, both in primary care as well as in hospital care. That is why in practice, nurses need to deal with chronic and complex injuries with total security, regardless of the service, area or specialty in which they work.
In recent years, a wide variety of products have been issued for the prevention and treatment of ulcers, but there are no studies comparing these as a means of evaluating their efficacy. This makes it hard for nurses, as care managers, to choose the best options at the lowest possible cost. Furthermore, each type of injury must be treated differently and certain studies have shown that professionals have difficulty in correctly assessing injury types.
Degree training provides basic knowledge, but this is insufficient for the continuous changes taking place in this field. An increase in the complexity of the patients treated, as well as the wide variety of therapeutic options that the biomedical industry has currently placed on the market, make it difficult for professionals to come to decisions about care and therefore justify the need for postgraduate programmes that help update knowledge based on the best available evidence.
Catalonia has nursing professionals who are expert in the care of patients suffering from burns or affected by chronic wounds; these professionals are nationally recognised. Their practical expertise is essential in training other nursing professionals with the support and endorsement given by the framework of university education.
