This diploma aims at training professional competence in the assessment of and forensic approach towards brain lesions that provoke cognitive psychological, behavioural and personality disorders that may have civil and criminal implications. This diploma aims to provide tools to develop the complex assessment activity required of behavioural neurologists and forensic neuropsychologists and also focusses on how to defend contributions made to a court of law. The programme covers the key issues of cognitive neurology and forensic and neuropsychological behaviour, starting with initial concepts on law, expert evidence and their working systems, expert report as evidence and legal and civil frameworks. Following are the principles of the neurology of forensic and neuropsychological behaviour as an academic discipline: specific clinical-forensic aspects such as cranioencephalic traumatisms, dementia charts, brain lesions, epilepsy, drug-abuse disorders, functional psychosis and psychiatric disorders, childhood disorders and intellectual disability. These are studied both from the clinical and forensic perspectives. In this way, we provide data on the strategies used by lawyers. The study of specific tests for the neurology of forensic and neuropsychological behaviour and its ecological validity is also a fundamental part of this training. The theoretical training provided aims to consolidate knowledge of the field.
The following characteristics are highlighted:
- Emphasis on the concepts of Evidence-Based Medicine (tests) and its application to Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neurology and behaviour within the forensic ambit. The project recognises that the university cannot provide “established knowledge”, but—instead— “current knowledge”, along with the resources to carry out professional activity in which an ongoing critical context and professional updating are constant.
- The systematisation of subjects and their continuous updating via the UAB Virtual Campus.
Syllabus structure: The syllabus is strictly defined with respect to structure and sequence. Each content module is subdivided into distinct subjects relating to the knowledge, skills and abilities described in section 3.
Logistics: The program is attendance-based, but at the end of the sessions, lecturers’ presentations will be uploaded to the UAB Virtual Campus. The training modules are sequentially activated to facilitate student access. Activations take place shortly before the start of each module. All subjects have a calendar and notifications function providing indications on content, classes, etc.
