Apart from the great interest that Ancient Egypt arouses in university students and the general public, this course was inspired by our previous experience with the online course in Egyptology, on the Coursera platform, which was well received by both university- and non university-goers, at home, in the rest of Spain and in Hispanic America, and shows the great potential that such courses have.

Contents

Ra en Kemet, the language of Egypt: this was the name the Ancient Egyptians gave to the language they spoke. It belonged to the Afro-Asiatic language family, spoken in the whole of Nilo-Saharan Africa and the Near East and which includes its cousins, the Semitic languages, such as Arabic. Ancient Egyptian is the language with the longest history of written records: spanning 5000 years of uninterrupted development. Throughout its history, the Egyptian language has been written in four different scripts: Hieroglyphic, Hieratic, Demotic and Coptic, of which the first is the best known. Hieroglyphics is a pictographic system, as the signs are images that represent beings, objects or real-life processes. It is therefore a script that communicates through both phoneticity and iconicity. In this course, students will be introduced to basic theoretical issues in Egyptian philology, such as the history of the language and the functioning of hieroglyphic writing. They will also study the phonology and basic grammar of classical Egyptian, in order to be able to read simple texts.
