Apart from the great interest that Ancient Egypt arouses in university students and the general public, this course was inspired by our previous experience with the online course in Egyptology, on the Coursera platform, which was well received by both university- and non-university-goers, at home, in the rest of Spain and in Hispanic America, and shows the great potential that such courses have.

Private life, development of the individual in the social and cultural setting, sexuality, gender relations, etc. are topics that traditional historiography has completely ignored, and which are now beginning to get the attention they deserve from specialists: in particular, those working in gender studies. The aim of this course is to explore our current knowledge about these topics in relation to Ancient Egyptian society. To do so, we will see what men and women in Ancient Egypt were like and how they lived: from when they were born, through their childhood, their rites of passage to adulthood and their full integration in society, to when they died. We will pay particular attention to groups that did not belong to the country's ruling elite: women, children, the elderly and everyone who played a part in history, albeit a minor one until now. In other words, we will study Egyptian society from the perspective of gender studies.
