Training Activities

Doctoral programs include research training both transversal and specific scope of each program, which are specified in three kinds of training activities: mandatories, optionals and transversal. Our doctoral program requires only mandatory training.

The student can complete the acquisition of knowledge in the field of research through stays abroad, which can be carried out, as appropriate, in the framework of Cotutelle (International joint supervision) with a foreign university (you can find out by clicking here) and the International Doctoral Research Component (you can find out by clicking here).

Mandatory training activities

The programmed mandatory training activities are:

1.  Participation in internal research group seminars (of hospitals or other health institutions):

To attend and participate in activities considered of interest for training in research (scientific methodology, epidemiology, database management, etc.) in the services of different hospitals (or other health institutions). The director of the doctoral thesis will guide the student about the training activities that are convenient to him/her. This activity should help the student to improve the knowledge necessary to carry out the doctoral thesis project.

The doctoral student must dedicate at least 50 hours to this activity.

The code of this activity in the 'Activity Documents' ('Documents d'Activitats' in catalan) section of the file in sia.uab.es is: '9 - Participació en seminaris interns de grup d'investigació/departament - Descripció variable' (9 - Participation in internal seminars of research group / department - Variable description).

2.  Hospital sessions (or other health institutions):

Attend and participate actively in the training sessions that are carried out periodically in the services of the different hospitals (or other health institutions). The director of the doctoral thesis will guide the student about the sessions that are convenient to him. This activity should enable the translation of the knowledge derived from these sessions and of the doctoral thesis into clinical practice.

The doctoral student must dedicate at least 100 hours to this activity.

The code of this activity in the 'Activity Documents' section of the file in sia.uab.es is: '16 - Sessions hospitalàries - Descripció variable' (16 - Hospital sessions - Variable description).

The doctoral thesis director/s and the tutor will define together with the doctoral student what the mandatory training activities will be, how and where they will be carried out. The content of which will be defined in point 2 of the Annex of the Compromise Document. These activities must be done at the latest during the first two courses of the thesis preparation period, and the department recommends that you do them during the first year. Assistance is requested for a minimum of 80% of the activity.

Optional training activities

- Elaboration of a research article, sent to a scientific journal with impact. Most doctoral candidates in the doctoral program publish the results of their research in high-level journals that impact on health field. The pedagogy on the convenience of publishing is extensive and, therefore, a large portion of the doctoral students can increase the doctoral curriculum with this optional activity. The student must present the article and the accreditation of the sending that has been made to an impact scientific journal.

The doctoral student must dedicate at least 500 hours to this activity.

- Assistance to seminars or conferences given by experts in the field of knowledge. The doctorate that attends seminars or conferences that the director has recommended for the interest of the development of the research, can recognize the accomplishment of the activity. The doctorate must present the certificate of attendance and a report of the director of the thesis.

The doctoral student must dedicate at least 10 hours to this activity.

- Participation in courses of methodological specialization. The doctorate that attends courses of methodological specialization that the director has recommended for his interest for the development of the research, can recognize the accomplishment of the activity. The doctorate must present the certificate of attendance and a report of the director of the thesis.

The doctoral student must dedicate at least 50 hours to this activity.

The first or second follow-up doctoral students who have carried out the compulsory training activities, will have to do so in the annual follow-up report, following the indications of the application. The platform will have to attach the model of the Certificate of completion of compulsory training activities without qualification, filled in and signed by all directors. This model can be downloaded from this same application and will serve to accredit the mandatory activities.

It is also mandatory for doctoral students to justify and record all training activities in their computer file, through the intranet. See the instructions here.
