Urquijo Bank Collection
Description of the collection:
Urquijo Bank was born in Madrid in 1870 as a collective company with the name of Banco de Urquijo, Ortueta and Arenzana (owned by Juan Manuel Urquijo Urrutia), becoming one of the most emblematic institutions of Spain in only a few years.
Urquijo Bank expanded throughout Spain and arrived in Barcelona in 1965, creating a Study Service led by Ramon Trias and Fargas, and becoming the first industrial bank in Spain.
With an eagerness for investing, sustained in the banking industry, Urquijo Bank participated in leading industries such as the Compañía Hispanoamericana de Electricidad, la Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima de Barcelona, Catalana de Gas y Electricidad, Hidroeléctrica de Cataluña, SEAT, Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval, Unión Eléctrica Madrileña, etc.
In 1982, Urquijo Bank became part of Banco Hispano Americano, which merged with Bankunión and created the Banco Urquijo-Unión. Later it became under the control of Banca March.
Finally, in 2006, it was acquired by Banco Sabadell and became a specialized entity in private banking.

The collection of the Social Sciences Library is made up of more than 7,000 documents that were donated to the UAB by the Banco Hispano Americano Group, from the Economics Library Trias Fargas, the old Library of the Studies Department Banco Urquijo, specialized in economics, regional and financial science and national and foreign statistics.
The donation ceremony was held at the Palau de la Generalitat on February 27, 1987 and presided over by the then President of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol.
