Antoni Lloret Collection

Fons Personal
Science and Technology Library

Personal collection of Antoni Lloret i Orriols, Catalan physicists active in the fields of high energy physics, solid state physics and photovoltaic power generation. Born in Barcelona in 1935, Lloret studied Physics at the University of Barcelona and got a doctorate from the universities of Barcelona and Paris-Sorbonne. He has spent part of his career in France as a member of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). In Catalonia he has collaborated with the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Barcelona and has been a professor and researcher in the Parc Científic of the same university. He has also acted as an independent expert in the field of nuclear safety for the Executive Council of the Generalitat de Catalunya and has promoted the development of photovoltaic energy. Corresponding member of the Institute of Catalan Studies, his scientific career has been recognized with the Medal Narcís Monturiol (2004) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (2008).

In addition to numerous scientific articles, Lloret has published science books and novels, including Dictionnaire de la Atome (with P. Musset, Larousse, 1964, translated into English and published by Collins in 1968); Diccionari de Ciència i Tecnologia Nuclears (Edicions 62, 1978); Micmac (with Jaume Fuster, Edicions de La Magrana, 1993) and El Café Metropol (Edicions de La Magrana, 1999). His latest novel is Max i Odile, raó i passió (Pagès, 2015).

Description of the collection: The collection consists of documents transferred to the UAB through the mediation of Xavier Roqué (Institut for the History of Science and Department of Philosophy, UAB). The documents are dated between 1968 and 1970, when Lloret directed the Experimental High Energy Group of the Spanish Nuclear Energy Board. The documents relate to Spain's first stage at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), and include press kits prepared by the Nuclear Energy Board when Spain was negotiating her continuity in the organization. Some of these documents have been used in various publications: X. Roqué, "España en el CERN (1961–1969), o el fracaso de la física autárquica", in N. Herran and X. Roqué, eds. La Física en la dictadura. Físicos, cultura y poder en España, 1939–1975 (Servei de Publicacions de la UAB, 2012), pp. 239–258; and X. Roqué, "Cultures of Research and the International Relations of Physics Through Francoism: Spain at CERN", in B. Balmer, A. F Canales and A. Gómez, eds. Science Policies and Twentieth-Century Dictatorships: Spain, Italy and Argentina (Ashgate, 2015), pp. 121–140.

Besides the above mentioned researcher, we acknowledge the collaboration of Mireia Bachs and Rosa Pujol (Science and Technology Library, UAB); and Carlos Acosta (Servei d'Arxius de Ciència and Institut for the History of Science, CEHIC, UAB). This work has been supported by the Servei d'Arxius de Ciència and by research project HAR2011-27308 Physics, Culture and Politics in Spain (Ministerio de Cultura e Innovación).

To complement the information about this collection, you can see interviews with Antoni Lloret realized in Barcelona by Alfons Carpio (2002) and Xavier Roqué (2012), in the framework of various research projects on physics in Spain.
