Introduction
In accordance with current legislation it is compulsory to notify the competent authorities of any activities with biological agents that require biosafety level 2 or above (section 10 and annex IV of RD 664/1997). In the case of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), this obligation affects the four types of hazardous activities (Ley 9/2003, RD 178/2004).
A declaration of activities must be submitted to the IBC irrespective of the legal requirements, whenever the activity involves the use of biological agents (microorganisms, cell lines, tissue or fluid samples, insects, plants, animals, pests, GMOs, biotoxins, etc.) and is conducted at facilities belonging to the UAB or to external organisations attached to the IBC-UAB.
