Pre-registrations for educational institutions to take part in the Lliga de Debat de Secundària i Batxillerat, led by Xarxa Vives, increased by 16% compared to last year’s statistics. The fourteen universities within the Xarxa Vives network increased their number of spots by 14%, but applications from high schools exceeded the offer. Moreover, more than 50% of participants will take part in the competition for the second year in a row.

This year, the debate will revolve around the topic “Are borders between countries necessary?”. The final round will take place between the 3 and 5 April, whilst the qualifying local rounds will be held during January and February in the 14 universities within the Xarxa Vives network. Last year, UAB celebrated the 10 Year Anniversary of the Lliga de Debat Universitària, and this year the 5th edition of the Lliga de Debat de Secundària i Batxillerat’s local round, which will take place during the week of 25 February 2019 in which 24 high schools will participate.

The aim of the Debate League is for students to improve their communicative competences when speaking in public as well as learning how to express themselves properly in an auditorium – these skills are increasingly more important for university students. Taking part in an event like this is a way to enhance the participants’ oratory skills. Students will be divided in teams of minimum two people and maximum five, with whom they will have to defend an argument for or against the debate’s topic.
