The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) carries out the fourth study on estimating the number of girls at risk of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in four new countries: Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg and Spain. The work was assigned to ICF, a global consulting services company that, in partnership with the Wassu-UAB Foundation, will implement the study in Spain, through an exhaustive investigation that includes the compilation of documentation, qualitative interviews, focus groups and statistical analysis.

The study will contribute to EIGE's efforts to carry out periodic FGM/C risk estimates and trend assessments, ensuring comparability of data across EU Member States, using the EIGE 2018 methodology, applied in Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy and Malta.

The overall objective is to support the European institutions and all Member States with accurate qualitative and quantitative information on FGM/C and the risk involved, taking into account migration patterns. In this way, it seeks to contribute to improving public policies focused on abandoning this harmful traditional practice.

Based on EIGE's previous work in this area, this study represents a fundamental step towards developing specific recommendations for each country, seeking to strengthen efforts to protect girls.
