In March, the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) chose the winners of the 2018 ICREA Acadèmia programme, which includes a total of 45 prizes aimed at fostering and recognising the excellence of the research conducted by public university lecturers in Catalonia, 12 of them from the UAB. On 30 April, the Palau de la Generalitat played host to the awards ceremony, presided by Minister for Business and Knowledge  Àngels Chacón and with the presence of Secretary for Universities and Research Francesc Xavier Grau.

The winners of the 2018 ICREA Acadèmia prizes at the UAB are Margarita León Borja from the Department of Political Science and Public Law and the Institute of Government and Public Policy (IGOP); David Urbano from the Department of Business; Esperança Bielsa from the Department of Sociology; Agustí Nieto-Galan from the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for the History of Science (CEHIC); David Roas from the Department of Spanish Studies; Javier Rodrigo Sánchez from the Department of Modern and Early Modern History; Joaquim Matias from the Department of Physics; Antonio M. López Peña from the Department of Computer Science and the Computer Vision Centre (CVC); Ferran Martin from the Department of Electronic Engineering; Fàtima Bosch from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Jordi Surrallés from the Department of Genetics and Microbiology; and Antonio Villaverde from the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB).

The ICREA Acadèmia programme focuses on intensifying research for lecturers currently giving classes and who are in the active and expansion phase of their career. The money awarded to each of the winners is of 40,000 Euros annually during five years.

With these prizes, the Government of Catalonia acknowledges the talent of researchers from Catalonia's public university system. The ICREA Acadèmia prizes, which this year celebrate their 10th edition, correspond to the 2018 call and are awarded in recognition to the research tasks undertaken by lecturers from any of the public universities in Catalonia, who at the same time contribute to retaining research talent within the country's universities.
