The Observatory for Equality is working on the “UAB diversa” project, which seeks to propose a model of toilets that includes the identities and different needs of all the people at the university. Therefore, a diagnosis was commissioned to the Col·lectiu Punt 6 to study the current situation of the toilets throughout the university campus. This report will be presented on Thursday 19 May at 12 noon at the Sala Cinema in the Plaça Cívica.

The presentation is part of the 17 May, the International Day against LGBTI-phobia. On this day we commemorate the day when the General Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) excluded homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Thus, it was no longer considered a mental illness and the process of coming to terms with what is a sexual orientation and gender identity began.

Nevertheless, this event not only demands the rights achieved through the struggle of the LGBTI community, but also the long road still ahead to ensure that gender identities and dissident sexual orientations are normalised and not questioned.

The struggle to eradicate LGBTI-phobia is present in many areas of society. And it is the responsibility of the entire education community to fight to reduce it until it disappears, creating safe spaces and effective protocols. At the UAB we have had the “Protocol against sexual harassment and harassment on grounds of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression” since 2016, which helps us to manage assaults, including the LGBTI-phobics.

In this framework, other activities will also take place at the UAB around the 17M. At the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology there will be a round table on Wednesday 11 May at 1pm. It will be about “LGBTIQ+ discrimination at the university: challenges and opportunities”. On Wednesday 18 May at 1.30pm, the gender group of the Faculty of Communication will organise a talk by Judith Juanhuix on the "Misuses of the scientific method in studies on trans people". It will be open to everyone and will take place in the Sala de Máster 2. The Observatory will also organise a round table on inclusive language on 9 June at 12:30 noon in the Sala Cinema.
