Nanoscience and nanotechnology festival at the UAB campus

Dimensio Nano
The UAB campus will host the nanoscience nanotechnology festival "10alamenos9" from 4 to 8 April with exhibits, workshops, conferences and laboratory open days.

29/03/2016

From 4 to 8 April, the Catalan Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the UAB Faculty of Science, the Barcelona Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB-CSIC), the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) and the ALBA Synchrotron participate in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival "10alamenos9". The festival is organised nationwide and is also celebrated in Barcelona, Donostia and Zaragoza.

The festival has the objective to offer an entertaining and exciting way for the public to discover the world of nanometrics (a nanometre is equal to one billionth of a metre, or "10 to the minus 9" metres) and its effects, regardless of the age and skills of the participants. Exhibits, workshops, seminars and others activities will be held with the aim of explaining the importance and impact of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Throughout the week, the exhibit "Dimensió Nano" will be on display at the hall of the Faculty of Science, with information on nanoparticles, nanomedicine, nanomaterials and their applications. On Monday and Tuesday, from 1 to 3 pm, the faculty will also offer workshops on nanoscience, with commercial products created using nanotechnology, experiments and demonstrations.

There will also be conferences offered by renowned researchers from the field of nanoscience, such as Maria José Esplandiu from ICN2, Jordi Pascual and Aitor Lopeandía from the UAB Department of Physics, Francesc Pérez Murano from IMB-CNM, Anna Laromaine from ICMAB-CSIC, and Isabel Pividori from the UAB Department of Chemistry. The ICN2, ALBA Synchrotron and ICMAB-CSIC will also offer guided tours around their facilities (on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively).

On Monday afternoon there will be a round table entitled "Ask a nanotechnologist", where undergraduate and postgraduate students in nanoscience and nanotechnology will answer questions about their studies, motivations and future perspectives.

The festival is financed by FECYT (Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness), sponsored by BASF, and includes the collaboration of the Ministry for Labour, Social Affairs and Families of the Government of Catalonia.
