UAB participates in a new European project to reduce CO2 emissions
02.05.2019 Department  -  The Group of Bioprocess Engineering and Applied Biocatalysis and the Fermentation Pilot Plant of the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of UAB participates in the new European Project BIOCON-CO2.

The new European Project BIOCON-CO2 started the 1stof January 2018. The Group of Bioprocess Engineering and Applied Biocatalysis and the Fermentation Pilot Plant of the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of UAB participates in this project which aims to develop biotechnological processes to transform the COproduced from iron, steel, cement and electric power industries into added-value compounds for the chemical industry. These bioprocesses will reduce i) the COgas emissions and ii) the fossil fuel dependency of chemical industry which could use COas carbon source. This project, funded by the European commission (H2020) will develop four different types of biotechnological processes using aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and enzymes.

The main task that will be carried out in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of UAB, led by Dr. Gregorio Álvaro, will be focused in the production of lactic acid from COusing a multi-enzymatic cascade system. The group will also use this hydroxy acid as monomer for the enzymatic synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA), a thermoplastic and biodegradable polymer highly attractive for biological and medical applications.

his project has received funding from the European Union’s H2020 research and Innovation programme under Grant agreement n° 761042 (BIOCON-CO2).
