The 9th edition of the Solidarity Race organised by the UAB in collaboration with the Cerdanyola city council, in support of the TV3 fundraiser La Marató, dedicated this year to Covid-19, has changed and will now be offered in a new format due to the pandemic, and is open until 1 March. All those interested can participate in the race, at their own pace and from wherever they may be, and at the same time contribute to the cause with their donation.

Throughout the eight previous editions, the UAB Solidarity Race has raised over 120,000 Euros for the yearly fundraiser broadcast by TV3, La Marató, with an average participation in each edition of some 2,000 people. The campus residence hall Vila Universitària, which marks the start and finish of the race, every year has been enveloped by a festive and sportive atmosphere which aimed to raise funds for research into the diseases chosen each year by TV3's fundraiser, La Marató.

This year, the current pandemic has forced the organisers to devise a new format with which to continue contributing to this supportive cause. That is why the UAB, in collaboration with the Cerdanyola city council, and with the sponsor of Applus+ Laboratories, this year organise the 2020 UAB Solidarity Race and Walk in support of La Marató, with a new safer, Covid-19 format.

From 7 December to 1 March, all those interested can participate in the 10K race and walk, the 6K race and walk, the 500 metre reduced mobility walk, and any other challenges and modalities people can think, individually or in groups.

By using an application, each person can personalise their participation and add up solidarity kilometres and donations. It will be like participating in several races in one: each person will be able to do the race from where they please and set their own group and personal challenges.

Starting on 7 December the Amics de la UAB (Friends of the UAB) will set up an application which will be available for mobile devices. At the moment, the registration form is available at the solidarity race website, where the challenges, kilometres done while training and during the race or walk can be registered. Donations starting at 1 Euros can also be made through the website.

Photos and videos will be put together to make a collage of all our participant on the same application and solidarity race website.

This edition will also take into account the commitment and efforts made by secondary and primary schools in Cerdanyola del Vallès and Bellaterra, as well as UAB entities and organisations interested in adding their own personal challenges.

The UAB conducts important research into the Covid-19 virus and is a vital player in raising-awareness among society and policy-makers about the need to collaborate and acquire resources for further research into the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. From the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Cerdanyola del Vallès city council there is a will to send out a message of appreciation to all those working in the medical, healthcare, social, business and volunteer sectors for being in the frontline and managing the multiple aspects of this health emergency first-hand.
