8 March marked by the feminist strike
11/03/2019
From the Observatory for Equality we have backed the feminist strike carried out as part of the International Women's Day. For the second year in a row, the backing of the strike has been massive in the UAB community. According to data by the Department of Work, Social Affairs and Families, the backing of the strike in universities was of 72.44% (data of workers and students together).
During the days before and after, the university community threw itself into carrying out all kinds of activities as part of the celebration of 8 March. We celebrate the implication of university students and workers during these days of claims and learning which should not be limited to this week but should take place during the whole year.
On 7 March, the traditional Institutional Event for the Commemoration of the International Women's Day. In the event, a recognition for her professional career and defense of the rights of women was given to Dr Maria Jesús Espuny, emeritus lecturer in the Department of Public Law and Historical-juridical Sciences and director of the Women and Rights Research Study Centre (CEDD).
Maria Jesús Espuny emotionally thanked for the award, in the first place, all women, specifically those at the UAB. She also had some words of gratitude for her family. "Everything I have done has been thanks to the collective effort, derived from an interdisciplinarity which only takes place in campuses such as the UAB's", said Espuny.
A life devoted to the University
Dr Maria Jesús Espuny has been a strong defender of university principles throughout her career as a lecturer and researcher. She was a pioneer to introduce gender perspective in the study of the history of law and was one of the creators of the Degree in Industrial Relations.
After receiving the recognition, Dr Espuny said: "I have only been a lecturer in the UAB's Faculty of Law who has tried to do the most good in her job". Espuny, throughout her career, has strongly believed in the project of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and as she says, is very proud to be an emeritus lecturer at the university.
For her total dedication to teaching, for her unnovative research in the area of History of Social Law and for her commitment with the university institution, this year the UAB has awarded Dr Maria Jesús Espuny with this recognition.
