Official Master's Degree in History of Science: History, Heritage and Scientific Communication

Access

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.

Admission requirements

To access the Master’s programme, the following requirements must be met:

1. Official university degree
To access the Master’s programme, it will be necessary to hold an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution in another country that is part of the European Higher Education Area or from other countries, which qualifies holders to access Master’s level studies in that country. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the History of Science, applicants can hold degrees in humanities or scientific fields without distinction, including degrees in science, bioscience, engineering, health science, humanities, social science, and information science. Applicants with degrees in humanities or social sciences will not need to take additional courses. The Master’s Committee will evaluate the academic profile of candidates coming from other degree programmes and may require, if necessary, the completion of additional training courses, as detailed below in the corresponding section.

2. Languages
Students whose native language is not Spanish or Catalan must certify a B2 level in these languages. If they do not have an official certificate, they can demonstrate their level through an interview with the Master’s degree coordination team, who will assess the candidate’s language skills using a pre-established rubric that will evaluate the candidate’s ability to:

  1. Maintain a brief conversation with a sufficient degree of fluency and intuitiveness, and
  2. Understand and then summarise out loud a text of no more than one page written in the same language.

Likewise, students whose native language is not English must certify a B2 level of this language (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe). If they do not have an official certificate, they can demonstrate their level through an interview with the Master’s coordination team, which will assess the candidate’s language skills using a pre-established rubric that evaluates the candidate’s ability to:

  1. Maintain a brief conversation with a sufficient degree of fluency and intuitiveness, and
  2. Understand and then summarise out loud a text of no more than one page written in the same language.

All requirements must be documented at the time of pre-registration, when a cover letter must also be provided. Admission is decided by the rector based on the agreement made by the Master’s Degree Academic Committee

Selection criteria

In the event that demand exceeds the number of available places, admission will be carried out in order of priority, based on the following criteria and weightings:

  1. Your academic record from your undergraduate degree: 50%
  2. Previous professional or academic experience in the fields of the history of science, scientific heritage, or scientific communication: 30% (to be evaluated through the submission of your CV)
  3. Motivation: 10% (the degree of professional and intellectual interest in the history of science, including its heritage and scientific communication dimensions, will be assessed through an individual interview)
  4. English: 10% (to be assessed through the submission of certificates proving a level higher than that required as an admission prerequisite)
