An article-based thesis consists of a compilation of several scholarly articles in which the Ph.D. student has taken part significantly.

Those students wishing to undertake and submit an Article-based Ph.D. must have the approval on the part of the Commission of the Ph.D. Programme before the thesis deposit and dissertation. The Committee meets four times a year, for this reason, it is important to plan the approval request in order not to interfere with the schedule deposit date.


  • Minimum of two puplications (articles, book chapters or books on the same line of research) published in scientific journals indexed in the international databases. The sum of the Impact Factor of the journals must be a minimum of 4 IF points or 75% of the IF of the best journal in the thematic area.
  • The papers have to be are published or accepted for publication after the date of registration of the thesis project.
  • That the publications that will be part of the article-based thesis have not been used in previous theses.
  • That UAB must be mentioned in the affiliation of the student or supervisor or r in the acknowledgments with the expression "This work has been done in the framework of the doctorate in ... of the Autonomous University of Barcelona "or a similar one.

You must submit he following documents to the Secretary Office of the Department of Physics:
  1. Application form.
  2. Supervisor's report. Indicating wheather the article-based thesis is appropiated. The impact factor of the journals must be stated specifically.
  3. Co-authors acceptance form (or resignation in case of non-doctors). One form for each co-author duly signed. (Form)
  4. Copy of the papers published or accepted. Add letter of acceptance in case of not yet being published.


The article-based PhD thesis must contain the following sections:
  • Introduction: presents the research work and provides coherence by explaining the line of argument to be developed in the articles.
  • A summary of the results and the discussion of these results.
  • The final conclusions, recomentations, etc.
  • A copy of the papers already published (those approved by the Commission of Ph.D. Programme)
