PhD FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION OPPORTUNITY
Project PigReg: Functional genomics, systems biology and microbiome analysis applied to the identification of genes regulating growth, fatness and meat quality in pigs. AGL2017-82641-R.
Meat quality is genetically determined and many QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) have been identified in pigs. Fatty acid composition is known to be one of the determinants of the sensorial and technological properties of meat. In previous works of our group a unique experimental animal population was generated by crossing Iberian boards with Landrace, Pietrain and Duroc sows obtaining several generations with more than 1,500 animals with phenotypic records. We have identified QTLs for growth, carcass, meat quality and fatty acid composition. Positional candidate genes for the main QTLs have been analysed, identifying relevant genetic variants. More recently, genomics and Next Generation Sequencing approaches were applied and the analysis of gut microbiome composition has been introduced. During the PhD project, different methods of functional genomics and bioinformatics data analysis will be applied for the identification of causal polymorphisms of these QTLs, including: RNA-Seq, SNP Chip genotyping, qPCR and gut microbiome characterization.
This project will be developed between the Departament de Ciència Animal i dels Aliments (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG).
Applicants should have a degree or M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Animal Science, Veterinary, Biotechnology, Genetics or similar) and should be accepted in a PhD program during the 2018/2019 academic year. The candidate should be interested in genetics and able to work both in a molecular genetics laboratory and in data management and analysis.
The fellowship funding is a minimum of €16,422 per annum and an additional € 6,250 for stays in other centres. The fellowship is tenable for a maximum of 4 years.
