  • Biography
  • Carlos A. Saura obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of Barcelona (Spain) in 1998. In 1998-2000, Dr. C. Saura performed postdoctoral training in the Department of Pathology-Neuropathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Department of Neurobiology at the University of Chicago under the mentoring of Professor G. Thinakaran. He investigated the the biology of genes causing autosomal-dominant familial Alzheimer’s disease. In 2000, he was appointed Instructor at the Department of Neurology at Harvard Medical School (Boston). At HMS and under the supervision of Professor J. Shen, Dr. Saura investigated the cellular and molecular mechanisms of memory and neurodegeneration in novel transgenic and knockout mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. In 2004, he was appointed Ramón y Cajal Research Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). Dr. C. Saura is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Institut de Neurociències of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Dr. Saura has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in molecular aspects of brain function and neurodegeneration, has leaded several national and international research projects and is an active collaborator of several national and international funding agencies and scientific journals.

Dr. C. Saura was member of the Executive Board of the Institut de Neurociències-UAB (2009-17), and he is a current member of the Directive Committee of the Sociedad Española de Neurociencia (SENC; 2015-19; treasurer) and coordinator of Neurobiology Section of the Societat Catalana de Biologia (2015-19).
