Abstract:
This article examines the effect of agricultural modernization on conflict over land. We show that the expansion of a capital- and land-intensive agricultural sector induced by economic liberalization in the mid-90s in Brazil led to an increase in cases of contested land. Traditional communities were particularly active in this surge of land disputes. We find empirical support for a mechanism involving a reduction of informally accessible land, and an increase in land inequality and rural unemployment. Moreover, our results suggest a role for employment opportunities in industry in mitigating conflict. Additional findings indicate that leaders mobilized the land-poor and that mobilization advanced land redistribution by the government.

Requisits: Ordinador amb connexió a internet, càmera i micròfon.

"Marital Property Regimes and Investments: Evidence from Spain"
Descripció:
Blanka Imre (Bocconi).
Abstract:
I estimate causal effects of the default marital property regime on a wide range of marital investments and outcomes, utilising the regional variation in marital property systems in Spain and the 2005 divorce reform. I find that the separate property regime promotes higher female labour supply, a family model of fewer children, and a lower marriage rate than the community property regime. These results provide substantial empirical support to property rights theory in that the ownership of assets matters for relationship-specific investments, and that joint ownership provides stronger incentives to make specific investments while non-integration encourages general investments.

The diffusion of knowledge: Evidence from the Jet Age (with S. Pauly)

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of travel time on the diffusion of knowledge. We provide causal evidence by exploiting the beginning of the Jet Age as a quasi-natural experiment. We digitize airlines' historical flight schedules and construct a novel data set of the flight network in the United States. Between 1951 and 1966, average travel time between locations more than 2,000km away decreased 49%. We use patent citations as a measure of knowledge diffusion. For research establishments located more than 2,000km away from each other, the reduction in travel time increased citations by 8.1%. The reduction in travel time accounts for more than one third of the observed increase in citations in this distance interval. Additionally, the reduction in travel time increased the diffusion of knowledge through multi-establishment firms. Firms opened research establishments in locations that obtained a relative reduction in travel time to headquarters. Firms carried knowledge across distant establishments and increased its diffusion.
