Descripción de las líneas de inveastigación

Nuestra investigación tiene como objetivo general desarrollar procesos de biodegradación de contaminantes de origen industrial presentes tanto en efluentes como en aguas subterráneas o suelos.

Estos contaminantes, en general, tienen como característica común una baja biodegradabilidad en procesos biológicos convencionales, por tanto hemos centrado la investigación en desarrollar procesos que utilicen los microrganismos más adecuados para cada caso: bacterias anaerobias, hongos y algas. En los últimos años, el grupo se ha especializado en la utilización de hongos ligninolíticos ya que presentan un amplio sistema enzimático inespecífico, capaz de degradar diversos tipos de contaminantes, tanto prioritarios como emergentes en efluentes. Además, nuestros estudios también incluyen la investigación en procesos de bioremediación de aguas subterráneas utilizando bacterias dehalorespiradoras para transformar compuestos orgánicos halogenados en compuestos inocuos. En el caso de las microalgas, desarrollamos procesos de depuración en los que estudiamos la asimilación de nutrientes y degradación de contaminantes emergentes en efluentes como aguas residuales urbanas y digestato. En todos los procesos se intenta cerrar el ciclo de los residuos y obtener agua depurada para su reutilización. Este aspecto es especialmente importante en los procesos utilizando microalgas, ya que son procesos de bajo costo y la metanización posterior de las microalgas producidas permite obtener energía a partir de un residuo, y resulta un balance económicamente favorable y ambientalmente sostenible.

La investigación abarca desde conocimientos básicos hasta el diseño del reactor más adecuado para tratar una determinada matriz contaminada.
