On October 10, at 16.30 h, the course was inaugurated in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Communication Sciences with the presence of Dr. Nuria Oliver, a world authority in artificial intelligence. During her speech, the lecturer stressed the close relationship between artificial intelligence and Communication Sciences. The event was live-streamed from UAB Campus Media.

The Vice-Dean of Teaching, Teachers and Students, Carmina Crusafon, began the inauguration by dedicating a warm introduction to Dr. Nuria Oliver and highlighting her long career in the technology sector.

Nuria Oliver started by remembering that the world's first programmer was a woman: Ada Byron. Oliver defines artificial intelligence as a discipline within computer science or engineering with the aim of developing intelligent machines taking as reference the human intelligence.

She also responded to why artificial intelligence is currently on the rise, as she said, it is due to the confluence of three factors: the availability of massive data, the large capacity of low-cost computing and algorithmic models.

Next, she explained that artificial intelligence is at the heart of the 4th industrial revolution and will have an impact on the new jobs of the future. Therefore, it is a sector that will have a high labor impact, so "it has become a political issue and more than 20 countries already have their national artificial intelligence strategies." Catalonia, for example, presented its plan this past summer.

According to Oliver, some of the challenges presented by artificial intelligence are the creation of models without discrimination and bias, manipulation derived from asymmetry in the availability of information and hyper-personalization. Oliver stressed above all the hyper-personalization of the media, namely, to offer users only content to which they can relate to, since this "reinforces our visions and polarizes public opinion."

To finish the act, she made it clear that "the future is here" and that the development of artificial intelligence will be key in the coming years.
