Master's Degree in Teaching Catalan as First and Second Language
IntroductionThis programme takes over from this country's two main teacher-training programmes in Catalan as a first and a second language: the Master's Degree in Teaching Catalan to Adults, of the UB and the University of Vic, and the Graduate Diploma in Teaching Catalan for Language Reception, of the UAB. The first of these began as a graduate diploma and ran from 1999-2000 to 2006-2007; from 2007-2008 on it became an Official Master's Degree with 90 ECTS (reduced to 60 three years later); and in 2013-2014 it was offered as a non-official master's degree with two embedded graduate diplomas. At the UAB, a master's degree of 60 ECTS was first offered in 2010-2011 and, at the behest of the UAB's Academic Affairs Committee it became a graduate diploma in 2013-2014 (50 ECTS). In this case the master's degree was intended to meet a perceived need at the UAB, which the university had made several previous attempts to address (the Graduate Diploma in Teaching Catalan as a Second and Foreign Language, proposed for 2004-2005, and the Official Master's Degree in Catalan and Spanish as Foreign Languages, proposed for 2007-2008).
ObjectivesThe aim of the programme is to help its students build up the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to become good teachers of Catalan to adult learners, at beginning levels (as a foreign language) and more advanced levels: teachers who are dynamic and versatile, able to convey a language and a culture in a lively, creative and practical way.
University degree with minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent provided the applicant submits a certificate of advanced proficiency in Catalan language.
- Catalan teacher and cultural activator at the Catalan Consortium for Language Normalisation (both in language reception and at higher levels). The Catalan Consortium for Language Normalisation has 22 centres spread around Catalonia, divided into regional services, local services and single offices (142 locations in total). In 2011 the Consortium had a staff of 687, 82 per cent of whom were language workers and around half teachers of Catalan to adults.
- Catalan teacher and cultural activator in university language services. Currently, language services and schools at the eleven Catalan universities focus much of their Catalan teaching on newly-arrived students, through language reception plans (cultural activities, language volunteers, language tandems, etc.).
- Catalan teacher at universities in other countries (with or without funding from the Institut Ramon Llull). Catalan studies are currently offered at 160 universities in 28 countries across all continents.
- Catalan teacher for adult learners within private companies (several companies offer their employees training in languages, such as El Corte Inglés, Movistar, etc.).
