Master's Degree in Teacher Development for Foreign Language Education and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Introduction

Given an increasingly globalized world, the introduction of multilingual approaches employing CLIL methodology and the spread of the competence-based curriculum, the need for students to be able to communicate in foreign languages (FL) within the education system has made it essential to take a fresh look at teaching and introduce innovative methods into the foreign language classroom. In institutional contexts like schools or universities, innovation in foreign language learning must necessarily involve collaboration between, on the one hand, teachers who are experts in a particular foreign language and, on the other, teachers who are using the foreign language as a vehicle for teaching non-language subjects and/or using it as a medium of communication within international projects.

The Master’s program offered here is intended to help teachers to develop a full range of skills specific to teaching in or about a foreign language, be fully familiar with the challenges of education in a multilingual context, and have the capacity to work as a team with teachers specialised in non-language disciplines.

Two itineraries are available, one focusing on Foreign Language Education (FLE), the other focusing on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

This programme in fact consists of the first block of 30 ECTS credits of the Master’s Degree programme, so once students obtain the Postgraduate Certificate they need only complete modules 6 through 10 to obtain the full Master’s Degree (see the equivalence chart).
