Non-infectious diseases account for 48% of mortality worldwide, with cardiovascular diseases being the main factor. The WHO has calculated that in 2012 deaths from cardiovascular pathologies reached 17.5 million people; this represents 31% of all deaths registered in the world: 7.4 million were from heart disease and 6.7 from strokes. If this trend is not addressed it is calculated that in 2030 55 million people will die from non-infectious diseases of which cardiovascular pathologies will remain the principle cause of death.

Similarly, in Catalonia diseases of the circulatory system are the primary cause of death in all health areas, with a gross overall rate of 241.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, constituting 27.9% of all deaths (30.3% in women and 25.5% in men). Death from cardiovascular disease increases with age and is the primary killer in women from the age of 74 and men from the age of 84.

On the other the Health Plan for Catalonia 2016-2020 establishes as health objectives and the reduction of inequalities in Horizon 2020, the reduction of the death rate from diseases of the circulatory system by 20% and a reduction in the death rate from ischaemic heart disease by 15%.

Scientific knowledge has demonstrated that cardiovascular diseases can be reduced through preventative and curative measures. These measures are based on the best available evidence, which must be applied to the knowledge and know-how of the health professionals, both in terms of the application of the measures themselves and in the empowerment of people and communities.

The University Nursing School of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, through the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has been offering the postgraduate course in Advanced Nursing Care for Patients with Cardiac Problems for over 21 years, transformed under the EHEA to become the Master's degree in Advanced Nursing Care for Patients with Cardiac Problems, giving us a traditionand expertise in training professionals in the care of heart patients.

We present the new Master's degree in Advanced Nursing Care for Patients with Cardiac Problems which restructures and updates the content of the degree offered previously. The new proposal for the Master's degree in Advanced Nursing Care for Patients with Cardiac Problems is a challenge which we have taken on with responsibility and respect, and which promotes aspects related to excellence and efficiency of care in advanced cardiac medicine.

It aimed to contribute to providing solutions to the new specific cardiovascular health demands in our society and the training needs in the area of cardiological nursing.
