Master's Degree in International Health and Cooperation
IntroductionThe Masterís Degree in International Health, a UAB-specific qualification, is a training project that, although now in its fifth year, is in fact a natural continuation of the Masterís Degree in International Health and Tropical Medicine that was first offered over 30 years ago, and which, via various formats and methodologies, has come down to the present time. This Masterís Degree has adapted to innovations in content and methodology in order to train qualified professionals in those areas of health and life (medicine, biology, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, nutrition, physiology, dentistry, etc.) that require specialized training and practice. It allows such professionals to continue with their professional activity whilst also catering for those who may wish to dedicate or orientate themselves professionally within the ambit of international cooperation and humanitarian action, working with NGOs, international organizations for cooperation in health development and international health centres in the identification, treatment and control of the most prevalent diseases in tropical geography and of those confined to low-income countries and the so-called 'fourth world'.
The training methodology is blended (i.e., semi-attendance based) and aims to be dynamic, innovative and practical; 55% of the teaching period is carried out on-line (Virtual Campus Moodle, Polimedia, wiki, etc.) and the remaining 45% is attendance-based and practical. This latter stage consists of guided learning with practical in-class application; once students have successfully completed this part, they must then carry out two-month placement (approx. 225 hours) assigned to a project, organization or cooperative institution, in a hospital health system within a low-income country or an international health centre providing attention to travellers from Spain. To obtain the degree, students must submit a report or masterís degree dissertation on their tutorised placement and formally present this before an evaluation committee.
The professionalising character of this masterís degree means that it is divided into four parts (two class-based sections; two practical sections). The class-based part begins with an attendance-obligatory opening week in which students are introduced to the study methodology, to the course resources that will be used and to the activities that will take place throughout the course. Lecturers will present and introduces the teaching section pertaining to their own subject. Following these sessions, the on-line period then begins. This consists of a core course (basic subjects), of 500 hoursí duration (20 ECTS) and a higher section (advanced courses), of 300 hoursí duration (12 ECTS). With reference to the practical sections, the first of these is attendance-based (450 hours, 18 ECTS). Following this, students must then carry out their placement (225 hours, 9 ECTS) and present and defend their report or masterís dissertation (6 ECTS).
The integrated social orientation of this training is directly linked to an international reality in which cooperation in health should be used to strengthen health systems in developing countries by creating agile and effective structures, and not simply be directed towards the fight against diseases or towards replacing specific vertical programmes. The demand for specialists with adequate training from NGOs and international-cooperation institutions reflects this, both in support projects and humanitarian cooperation and in the health centres and networks of these countries, as well as in the services and of international health agencies in the developed countries. We therefore propose this specific form of training to respond to this professional demand.
Objectives- Understand the main factors that impact health and their links to poverty, together with the ability of public authorities to take steps towards improving health and the limits to this ability.
- Learn the principles underpinning the analysis of international cooperation, learn about health problems in low- and medium-income regions, and establish specific functional solutions to these health problems.
- Learn to adopt interculturality as the vehicle for professional health care based on the use of anthropological methodology, community health as a tool in health programmes and knowledge of alternative and traditional medicines.
- Introduce students to the needs of logistics and cooperation-project management, and to systems of accounting and evaluation of results with regard to the objectives.
- Know the geoepidemiological conditions in the ecosystems visited by travellers, and all the activities for preventing and controlling the effects of imported pathologies.
- Describe the principal health problems in low- and medium-income countries and implement the necessary prevention measures, for both adults and children, together with simple, essential laboratory-diagnosis techniques.
- Introduce basic planning and assessment tools into the methodologies for taking cooperative action in mental health programmes from a multidisciplinary, psychosocial and community-centred perspective.
- Understand sexual and reproductive health problems in low- and medium-income countries, gender roles and the need to act as a bridge between two mindsets.
- Familiarise future aid workers with the organisational and operational needs of an emergency health intervention and learn to apply the basic knowledge needed to obtain results effectively.
- Use suitable tools and methodologies to analyse data and describe health problems in order to determine causes and act in consequence.
Help students to apply all the knowledge acquired during their studies in a health cooperation context or in international health centres, through a placement period.
Access is open to graduates in Medicine, Biomedicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and other health sciences or life sciences, and to qualified nurses or other qualified healthcare professionals.
