Màster en Estudis Àrabs Contemporanis

The Master's Degree in Contemporary Arab Studies (MEAC) is a project born within the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at the UAB. The general objective of this master's degree is to offer excellent training in contemporary Arabic language, culture and societies in response to a growing social and institutional demand for regional experts.

Taught entirely in Arabic by Arabic-speaking professors with a solid academic and professional background, the MEAC is currently the only master's degree in Modern Arabic Studies in Europe that uses Arabic as the only language of instruction. It is also the only master's degree that offers a progression in the learning of the Arabic language from level B of the CEFR to level C, the highest of those proposed by the CEFR.

The profile of the students targeted by the Master is that of people who wish to deepen their knowledge of the modern Arabic language and culture. Coming from both Spain and other countries, candidates for the MEAC must have a minimum level of standard Arabic equivalent to B1 of the CEFR. This profile includes, for example, Arabic-speaking students graduating in any type of university studies who have an Arabic dialect as their mother tongue and an average level of Modern Standard Arabic. Also included in this profile are non-Arabophones who have studied Arabic for several years at the university or para-university level (official language schools, language academies), and who preferably have spent at least six months studying Arabic in an Arab country.

In addition to the emphasis on the Arabic language, the MEAC is distinguished from other similar master's programs by its contemporary character and its commitment to the new forms of social and political organization in Arab countries; by the presence, contribution and demands of women in the social, historical and political development of these countries; by the cultural and religious diversity in Arab countries; by the cultural and religious diversity in the Arab world; by the cultural and religious diversity in today's Arab societies; and by the defense of human rights, including the rights of LGTBIQ people, racialized minorities or any other group socially discriminated against due to origin, sex, language, religion, ideology, sexual orientation, among others.

Faced with an offer of Masters in Arab Studies mostly based on traditional contents, the MEAC proposes a modern and innovative approach to the Arab reality of today, with special emphasis on fundamental issues such as ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, new forms of family and social organization, cosmopolitanism, hybridization, population movements, social claims and contestations, social activism, human rights, post-modernity, political and ideological dissidence, alternative media, etc. The choice of this approach for our master is not gratuitous: we have long detected a growing interest in these issues by students, increasingly aware of the gap between the Arab world today and the traditional vision they receive from the academy. We believe that only through a transparent and honest approach (through the Arabic language) to contemporary reality (through current and socially engaged content, moving away from the traditional examination of classical Arab culture, focusing instead on Arab POP culture and new socio-creative trends), can we build positive and sustainable links with today's Arab world.
