Graduate Diploma in Typography, from the Creation of the Letter to Publishing
IntroductionThe course focuses on two objectives: the design of fonts and the design of pages based on the typography used.
Modules 1 and 2, dedicated to the design of fonts, aim to delve deeper into the history of letters and their forms through practical subjects such as Calligraphy, Lettering, Digital Constructions and Alphabetical Architecture, together with theoretical sessions in History of Typography and sessions in Palaeotypography, Font Formats and Pyton Programming.
Modules 3 and 4 focus on the study of the use of typography as a graphic element in the design of pages and the structuring of publications through practical subjects such as Press Design, Magazine Layout and Art Management, together with theoretical sessions in History of Pages and sessions in Infography, Typographic Cannon and Orthotypography.
ObjectivesThis graduate diploma aims to provide education and research in the field of typography, interpreted here in its broadest sense. The programme is divided into two complementary modules: Form of the Letter (module 1) and Internal Compositional Structures of the Page (module 2).
- To be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Typography: From the Creation of Fonts to Publishing, you must hold a three-year or four-year degree.
- Candidates from the following fields may apply: Graduates in Design or Fine Arts, and professionals working in the design, publishing, press, advertising and image sector who are interested in acquiring new knowledge in this subject.
You may still be admitted if you do not hold a degree but do present your academic and professional CV and a sample of any type of graphic designs. The course coordinator will then evaluate your experience in relation to the course. In this case however you will only be able to acquire a Certificate of Attendance upon completing the course.
Given that this is a highly specialised graduate certificate, it is advisable for candidates to have previous experience in graphic design and typography, as well as experience in Quark-Xpress, Indesign and similar software. You do not need previous experience in the design of fonts or in font-editing software.
