Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Humanities
IntroductionThis Graduate Diploma is organised by the School of Tourism and Hotel Management, affiliated to the UAB, and uses the humanities as the basis for training specialists in the management of content and organisations.
Knowledge of the humanities adds value to any human activity.
Tourism, in general, is a massive, globalised, and often regimented phenomenon. In the mid- and long term this lowers its value, which stems from providing experiences that are enjoyable and economical. It also goes against the ethical code of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). These economic and ethical problems could seriously affect the tourism sector, one of the mainstays of the national economy, so solutions need to be found quickly.
Historically, humanities graduates have found it more difficult to progress in their careers than graduates in other fields, in spite of being equally or even better prepared. The tourism industry can claim to offer magnificent careers for graduates in history, geography, philosophy, anthropology etc.
Students of tourism traditionally learn the basics of management and organisation in the sector. If they have a chance to link this to a knowledge of subjects within the humanities this will give a great boost to their professional development.
The future of the tourism industry and of those communities that wish to share their heritage, both tangible and intangible, both natural and cultural, lies in the ethical and responsible nature of its activities. This graduate diploma programme aspires to train up the professionals who will bring about that future.
