ICTA-UAB organizes its 1st Spring Symposium to address environmental challenges

More than 120 international scientists, mostly belonging to this research centre dedicated to studying the environment and the causes of environmental problems, will participate in a two-day meeting in which they will present the main novelties of their studies. The papers that will be presented cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, from chemical engineering to environmental economics, and from climate modeling to ecological anthropology.

Through some forty oral presentations and posters of various disciplines, researchers of the ICTA-UAB will show that the approach to environmental issues must be carried out from all areas of knowledge. With the environmental concern as a backdrop, this symposium will present scientific advances in such diverse topics as circular economy, biodiversity conservation policies, local environmental knowledge of indigenous people, the future of green cities, climate resilience, green gentrification, solar energy and its implications for environmental justice, global regulation of marine fisheries, materials for sustainable cities, red coral conservation, mining pollution, reduction of energy consumption for the fulfilment of the Paris Agreement objectives, and pollution due to microplastics. Bringing together art and science, there will be sessions of artistic dynamism and presentations of scientific posters accompanied by cheese and wine. The main conferences will be given by three researchers who work in leading international centres in environmental research, two of them trained at the ICTA-UAB.

Since its creation in 2003, ICTA-UAB has experienced a continuous and steady growth, and currently includes 70 senior researchers who participate in approximately 200 scientific publications every year, covering all major journals dealing with environmental issues. ICTA-UAB has some thirty
Postdoctoral Fellows and around 30 PhD students graduate from ICTA-UAB each year. Distinguished by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness as a 'María de Maeztu Excellence Unit', ICTA-UAB is on the way to becoming one of the leading European centres in environmental studies, distinguished by its international focus, multi-disciplinary approach to environmental studies, and cooperation between various stakeholders within the framework of sustainability based on social responsibility.
