The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT, for its initials in Spanish) recently published its latest report on bibliometric indicators of scientific activities in Spain from the period 2005-2014 (Indicadors Bibliomètrics de l’Activitat Científica Espanyola 2005-2014). The analysis places the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in second position among universities in number of "excellent" publications, those that are included in the 10% most cited during that period.

With 5,577 publications, the UAB ranks second after the University of Barcelona, which has 7,020 excellent publications. Only the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) surpasses the two universities and positions itself as the first research centre in Spanish in terms of excellent publications, with a total of 12,506 during the 2005-2014 period.

The FECYT report aims to identify the most relevant aspects of scientific production in Spain, with the objective of improving knowledge of the Spanish System of Science, Technology and Innovation. The report analyses the position of Spain within the international context by comparing it to the thirty main countries producing scientific publications; it analyses the thematic distribution of scientific production in Spain, an analysis of the focus put on production in certain areas according to the Scopus classification system, with 27 thematic areas and 334 sub-areas of knowledge;  and it also analyses the geographic distribution of this production.
