Scientists working in UAB-affiliated institutes have achieved outstanding positions in a research carried out by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation on the most cited researchers in the field of biomedicine in Spain. The research, funded by the Banc Sabadell Foundation and directed by Jordi Camí, lecturer of the UPF Department of Experimental Sciences and Health, focuses on scientific publications appearing between 1997 and 2011.

In the classification of lead authors of studies among the top 1% of most cited articles in their speciality are Josep Baselga and Jordi Rello (Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, from the UAB-CIE Hospital Sphere), Joaquim Segalés and Tuija Kekarainen (Animal Health Research Centre, from the UAB-CIE Sphere), Rafael Rosell (Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, from the UAB-CIE Hospital Sphere) and Pere Arús (Centre for Research in Agrigenomics, from the UAB-CIE Sphere under the consortium between CSIC, IRTA, UAB and UB).

In the classification by disciplines, Xavier Montalbán (Vall d'Hebron Hospital, from the UAB-CIE Hospital Sphere) leads the classification in the field of clinical neurology, while Antonio Artigas (Parc Taulí Health Corporation, from the UAB-CIE Sphere) is leader in intensive cares and Josep Baselga is leader in oncology.

To carry out this study, the source used was the National Citation Report for Spain (NCR) 2012 by Thomson-Reuters. A total of 2,514 highly cited articles were detected, i.e. those among the 1% of most cited articles in their speciality. Of these, 1,151 were led by Spanish researchers. In total, over 180,000 research papers in biomedicine were published by Spanish authors during the period studied.
