UAB celebrates Sant Jordi

This year, Sant Jordi celebrations will begin on Monday 20 April at 7 pm with the Sant Jordi Concert offered by the UAB Choir, the UB Choir (Faculty of Pharmacology) and the Jove Orquestra de Cerdanyola del Vallès, who will be interpreting pieces by Sibelius, Elgar and Grieg.
 
On the day before Sant Jordi, on 22 April, several activities will also take place, such as the I Marathon of Feminist Poetryorganised by the Observatory for Equality and which will continue until the afternoon of 23 April; and the Sant Jordi Fantàstic by the Lofantastico.com Lecture Club. At 1:30 pm there will be the performance HARKET [PROTOCOLO], which focuses on trust and betrayal through a combination of dance, theatre, humour, music, design and “video-mapping”.
 
Sant Jordi Fair
On 23 April, Sant Jordi, the Plaça Cívica will fill with cultural, ludic and solidarity activities. The Sant Jordi Fair will begin at 11 am with a poetry reading entitled "Belles Guerreres". The fair will include stands where UAB associations and clubs will offer information and present their activities. From 12 noon to 4 pm, visitors will be able to chat with people at the stands “Jo participo! I tu?” by Dinamització Comunitària, and visit the Fundació Autònoma Solidària's (FAS) "Xiringu" stand, to receive information on drug abuse and safe sex. Another FAS proposal includes the Human Library of “Mites i prejudicis sobre el del món de la presó”, an innovative activity in which books will come to life as people who have been to jail and explain their experiences from different points of view. Before beginning the Solidarity Lunch at 1:30 pm there will be a collective and multilingual reading of the book La Plaça del Diamant, by Mercè Rodoreda, by the Languages Service.
 
Solidarity Lunch Against Food Waste
Coinciding with Earth Day on 22 April, the food for the UAB solidarity lunch will be donated by several fruit and vegetable stands from the Mercavallès wholesale market. Volunteers are needed for this activity. A food drive will also be held during the day, with all donations going to the Food Bank Foundation. Lunch will be served from 1 pm to 3 pm.
 
Verdi Previews and Performances
At 12 noon there will be a Verdi preview with the film "Girlhood" and at 12:30 pm the UAB Combo will offer a concert which combines jazz, funky and blues styles. At 3pm there will be a gospel concert by the group The New Zombis. The projections and performances are organised by Cultura en Viu.
 
Awards and Competitions
Sant Jordi has also been the day chosen to proclaim the UAB Hereu and Pubilla. At 1:15 pm we will know who are the winners of the contest and the two people in charge of representing the university at all the events to which it is invited. Prizes will also be given for the best short stories and photographs on exchange experiences at the Eighth Exchange Stories and Photos Competition and at 2:30 pm for the UAB Role Playing Club's Literary Competition. This will also mark the beginning of the II Erotic Stories Competition organised by FAS.
 
The last activity to form part of the Sant Jordi celebrations will take place on 28 April and will consist in a film show and debate on “Pagar per viure” organised by the Medicine Students Council.
