Five centres of excellence “Severo Ochoa” and two units of excellence “María de Maeztu” are located on the UAB campus. This makes UAB the university with the highest number of scientifically distinguished institutes in Spain. The “Workshop Excellence 2016. Strategies Towards Achieving a Top Level of Scientific Excellence at the UAB Campus” has been organised by these institutes with the aim of sharing impressions about scientific excellence and the strategies to achieve the highest level of research.

The centres of excellence “Severo Ochoa” located on campus are the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), the Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE), the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) and the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE). The two units of excellence “María de Maeztu” are the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) and the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath).

Almost 200 attendees will gather on Monday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) to share the different organizational structures that have led these centres to be awarded these accreditations. The high-level researchers will discuss and contrast a variety of political and scientific strategies applied by different public and private entities/institutes. The purpose is to encourage and stimulate the scientific community at universities and research centers to achieve the highest scientific level of excellence.

The event will count with the presence of the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation Dr. Carmen Vela, as well as prominent personalities from some of the most relevant academic and research institutes from all over Europe.

A joint effort has been made to draw up an interesting and competitive programme. Representatives of the different excellence centres will present their institutes to the attendees. Different lectures and round tables have been organised for the event. Professor Rolf Tarrach, president of the European University Association and member of the Board of Trustees (Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology - BIST), will give a lecture on “European Universities’ Paths Towards Excellence”, and Professor Dr Thorsten Posselt, executive director of the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy in Leipzig, will talk about “The Role of Scientific Excellence in the Relationship between Technology and Research Centres with Manufacturing Companies”. Dr Frank Lehner will address the issue of “Scientific Excellence in Large Research Facilities” and the two round tables will deal with “Human Resources Policies for Institutional Excellence” and “Strategies for Finance and Support for Research Excellence”. The event will be closed by Professor Andreu Mas-Colell, president of the Board of Trustees of BIST.
