The UAB maintains its worldwide position in Veterinary Medicine according to the Shanghai ranking

The quality in teaching and research conducted in veterinary medicine at the UAB has positioned it in ninth place in the 2018 edition of the Shanghai ranking, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) prepared each year by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This is one of the most prestigious classifications of higher education institutions.
The UAB features among the 51 to 75 best universities in agricultural sciences, among the 76 to 100 best in geography, economics and biotechnology; and among the 101 to 150 range in mathematics, physics, ecology, oceanography, nanotechnology, environmental engineering, human biology, pharmacology, sociology and public administration; and among the 151 to 200 best institutes in the fields of chemistry, geology, atmospheric science, instruments science and technology, materials engineering, food technology, medicine, medical technologies and communication.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003. ARWU takes into account six objective indicators in its classification of universities: the number of students and professors with a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of high impact scientific articles selected by Thomson Reuters, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, the number of articles in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and the relative performance of each university.
