On 29 April, Madrid's Teatro Español presented the premiere of the play "Mujeres y Criados". The premiere thus marked the end of the scientific and cultural dissemination of the unpublished work of Lope de Vega, coordinated by the UAB group PROLOPE.

The Teatro Español and Fundación Siglo de Oro offered on 29 April the first performance of “Mujeres y criados”, Lope de Vega's comedia discovered in 2013 by Alejandro García-Reidy, researcher of the UAB group PROLOPE and professor of Syracuse University.

The performance represented the culmination of a process put forth and coordinated by PROLOPE with the aim of offering both experts and society in general the ability to study and to enjoy the work.

“The satisfaction is total, because this has been an example of the good results achieved when working in collaboration. Thanks to the efforts and the synergy of Alejandro García-Reidy, the Spanish National Library (BNE), PROLOPE, Gredos publishing house and the Fundación Siglo de Oro, the edition was one of the most sold books and in 2015 it can be seen in theatres, where we hope it will also be very successful. The library, university researchers, publishers and actors have all worked together to offer the greatest and best type of conservation and dissemination of our cultural heritage", explains Ramón Valdés, co-director of PROLOPE.

“The rhythm of the play is frenetic, and the strong characters of the women, as detected by García-Reidy when he discovered the text, makes it even more attractive and appealing to today's audiences”, Valdés adds.

The version performed at the Teatro Español, prepared jointly by Alejandro García-Reidy, Rodrigo Arribas and Jesús Font, is a minimum adaptation of the comedia, extremely loyal to the original text by Lope de Vega, in which only a few words have been changed to make it more understandable for the public.

The play will be staged in Madrid from 29 April to 24 May; following that, the theatre company will begin a national and international tour.
