The Centre for Food Technology Innovation, Research and Transference and the Department of Animal and Food Science at the UAB have organised the 16th Workshop on Rapid Methods and Automation in Food Microbiology, taking place from 21 to 24 November at the auditorium (Sala d'Actes) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The workshop is addressed to both students and professionals and aims to broaden and spread the theoretical and practical knowledge of innovative methods for rapid detection, enumeration, isolation and characterisation of foodborne and waterborne microorganisms. During the workshop's four days there will be a series of conferences offered by prestigious local and international experts, practical lab sessions, workshops, round tables and an exhibition of microbiology companies.

This year the opening conference will be given by José Juan Rodríguez, professor of the UAB Department of Animal and Food Science. He will speak on the general view on rapid and miniaturised methods, as well as on automation in microbiology. Other speakers at the workshop will be UAB Professor Armand Sánchez Bonastre, who will speak on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and massive genome sequencing applied to food safety. European food safety authority Rosella Brozzi will speak on the evaluation of additives based on microorganisms used in animal feed and the risk of resistance to antimicrobials.

On 22 November, technicians from different companies will speak on the microbiological control in foods, the implementation of a cleaning verification system based on bioluminescence and on intruding microorganisms in poultry products.

On 23 November, Seppo Ilmari, microbiology professor at the University of Helsinki, will offer a conference on the uncertainty of the measurement of the microbiological counts. Following, Xavier Lizana, member of ACONSA, will speak on the tool for the management of food hygiene audits. Finally, the day will end with a round table on instrumentation in food microbiology and current market trends. The last day will be dedicated to laboratory sessions and a series of workshops.
