Sixteen UAB and UAB-CIE projects receive 4M Euros from the Marató TV3

A total of 3,963,776 euros has gone to financing projects on neurodegenerative diseases conducted by research groups at the UAB and the UAB-CIE Sphere. Researchers of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona participate in the five UAB projects which received a total of 1,365,080 euros in funding. Another 11 projects presented by groups belonging to the university research institutes of the UAB-CIE Sphere, such as the Research Institute of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau and the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Research Institute, received a total of 2,598,696 euros in funding.
The success of the La Marató 2013 fundraiser - with a total of 11 million euros raised - made it possible to finance 44 research projects on neurodegenerative diseases. It is the first year so many projects have benefitted from the fundraising marathon, surpassing the 42 projects on cancer from the La Marató 2012. It is also one of the most important investments in research made in the 22 years of existence of the fundraiser.
During the next 3 years, a total of 79 research teams will work on the creation of new prevention, diagnosis and treatment methods for neurodegenerative diseases.
Of the 44 projects, 23 belong to single units and 21 are coordinated between two or more research centres, thus fostering the creation of networks between different research groups. The projects will be carried out at 54 research centres: 38 are located in Catalonia, 9 in Spain and 7 in more than one country.
In 2019, the marathon's foundation will present the results of the research projects at a scientific symposium.
In 22 editions, the Marató de TV3 has raised 131 million euros and has been a huge boost for the scientific research into a variety of different diseases thanks to the funding of 680 biomedical research projects of excellence.
The call for neurodegenerative diseases needing financial support opened by the Fundació de La Marató in February received applications from 187 projects, which were evaluated by 96 international experts in an evaluation process coordinated by the Catalan Health Quality and Evaluation Agency (AQUAS). A total of 96 experts reviewed the projects following a rigorous evaluation process on the quality, methodology, scientific, health and social relevance, innovative value and viability.
