Ron Lesthaeghe visits the UAB Centre for Demographic Studies

Ron Lesthaeghe, sociologist at the Free University of Brussels, is visiting the Centre for Demographic Studies to collaborate with director Albert Esteve with a research project on the different perspectives of family formation patterns around the world.

From 15 to 28 February, the UAB Centre for Demographic Studies (CED) will count with the presence of Ron Lesthaeghe, professor emeritus of the Free University of Brussels. Lesthaeghe is collaborating in the project entitled "Towards a unified analysis of world population: family patterns in multilevel perspective", directed by Albert Esteve.

The overall objective of the project is the development of conceptual and analytical tools used in establishing formal links in demographic research between perspectives at macro and micro levels, and apply them to the study of global family formation patterns.

Ron Lesthaeghe was associate researcher of the Office of Population Research of Princeton University (1971-1973) and worked for the Population Council in West & Central Africa(1975-1976). Since 1971, he has worked as professor in demography and social sciences at the Free University of Brussels. From 1988 to 1991, he was dean of the university's Faculty of Economics, Sociology and Political Science, and since 2005 he is Professor Emeritus of Demography and Social Science Methodology of the same university. Lesthaeghe is a regular visitor to the Centre for Demographic Studies of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he has collaborated in several projects.
