The XV Workshop on Rapid Methods and Automation in Food Microbiology (MRAMA, for its acronym in Catalan) will take place from 22 to 25 November at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and is organised by the Centre for the Innovation, Research and Transference in Food Technology and the Department of Animal and Food Science.

09/11/2016

The MRAMA workshop aims to be a place in which to broaden and disseminate theoretical and practical knowledge on innovative rapid methods for the detection, enumeration, isolation and characterisation of microorganisms and their metabolites, commonly found in food and water.

Lasting a total of four days, the workshop will include conferences by prestigious national and international experts, practical lab sessions, workshops, debates and information stands for more than ten different microbiology firms.

In this edition, the opening conference will be given by José Juan Rodríguez Jerez, lecturer of the UAB Department of Animal and Food Science, who will talk on the general vision of rapid and miniaturised methods, and on automation in microbiology.

Other speakers at the workshop will be Armand Sánchez Bonastre (UAB Department of Animal and Food Science), who will speak on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and massive genome sequencing applied to food safety; David Rodríguez Lázaro (University of Burgos), with a conference on the harmonisation and standardisation in food molecular microbiology; José Martínez Peinado (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), who will speak on food yeast; Maria del Carmen Portillo (Rovira i Virgili University), who will speak on production and detection of microbiological alterations in wines and cavas.

The international speakers in this year's edition will be Olav Sliekers (Purac Biochem, the Netherlands), with a conference on the meat and meat product spoilage in the genomic era; Martin G. Wilkinson (University of Limerick, Ireland), who will speak on flow cytometry and food microbiology; and David Tomás Fornés (Nestec, Nestlé Research Centre, Switzerland), who will talk about sampling techniques for microbiological environmetal monitoring in the food industry.

The last day will be dedicated to three laboratory sessions, on the microbiological risks of HACCP systems, the use of internet for applciations of predicitive microbiology and on the methods for the detection and quantification of food allergens.

The MRAMA workshop is addressed to directors and technicians from the food industries, consultancies and laboratories, and from other sectors (microbiological, clinical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, environmental, etc.); food inspectors and other government staff; university teachers and technical staff, graduate and postgraduate students; people from other research centres; etc.
