Journalist Rosa M. Calaf inaugurates the 2016/17 academic year

The UAB officially opened the academic year with an institutional event on 3 October at the Rectorat building. Rosa María Calaf offered the opening lecture entitled "Sortim de l'ombra. Contra la ignorància i la desigualtat".

On 3 October, the official opening event of the 2016/17 academic year took place at the Rectorat building. The event included an opening lecture on ignorances and inequalities entitled "Sortim de l'ombra. Contra la ignorància i la desigualtat", given by Rosa María Calaf, a TVE correspondent who has worked in many countries throughout her long and distinguished career. Rector of the UAB Margarita Arboix presided the event, which included the participation of Arcadi Navarro, Secretary of Universities and Research. 

Rosa María Calaf earned a degree in Law at the UB and a degree in journalism at the UAB. She later went on to earn master's degrees in the same areas from the Université libre de Bruxelles and from the University of California, Los Angeles. Throughout her professional career at Televisión Española (TVE) she has worked as a correspondent in New York, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Rome, Vienna, Hong Kong and Beijing. She was appointed director of programming and production of Catalonia's television channel TV3 during its first years and also worked as a collaborator of the 13TV morning show "Te damos la mañana".

Among the many awards she has received are an Ondas award, a national award for journalism by the Government of Catalonia, an International Journalist Club prize for the best foreign correspondent, a José Couso award for freedom of press and a journalism award by the Association of Catalan Journalists. She also received a Spanish Civil Order's Dame Bow and has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Rovira i Virgili University, the Miguel Hernández University and the Universitat Jaume I. Since 2007, an annual award given in Jaén in recognition of achievements in several fields such as the environment, armed conflicts and social movements carries her name.
