The UAB Rector has appointed as new director of the Observatory for Equality journalist and writer Joana Gallego, professor of Communication Studies. The Governing Team aims to spur more communication at the Observatory, with the aim of strengthening its role as an awareness-raiser.

Joana Gallego took on the position as director of the Observatory for Equality on 22 November, taking over from Teresa Freixes. Gallego is professor at the Faculty of Communication Studies and co-directs the master's degree in Gender and Communication.

The Observatory began its activities at the UAB in 2005, and worked mainly fighting against inequalities between women and men. In 2008, it grew to act in favour of all collectives which could find themselves in unfavourable conditions due to their physical, economic, or social situation (immigration, age, sexual orientation, etc.). Currently, the Observatory for Equality is focused on the analysis of inequalities in higher education, and specifically on the study and diagnosis of sexism and inequalities for the disabled, from an intersectional perspective; offering technical support in the design and evaluation of policies of equality; and increasingly involved in raising awareness of these issues amongst the UAB community.

Writer and Journalist

Joana Gallego has spent 30 years researching and writing about the treatment of women in the media. In 2001 she was awarded the First Prize of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia for a research project she directed entitled "La prensa por dentro" (The Press from Within).
