Ana Ripoll receives the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise award

The Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise is conferred onto people and entities with a distinguished trajectory in education, research and/or culture by the Spanish Ministry of Education,Culture and Sport. Among the people receiving the award this year is Ana Ripoll, the first woman rector of the UAB.

Ana Ripoll, professor in architecture and computer technology, as well as former rector of the UAB, was awarded the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. This award is given in recognition of the merits made by individuals and entities in the fields of education, science, culture, teaching and research.

Dr Ripoll was Vice Rector for Teaching Staff during the second mandate of Rector Lluís Ferrer (2005-2008) and the first woman rector of the UAB (2009-2012). She earned her degree in Physics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1975 and her doctor's degree from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1980. Ripoll received a grant from the Spanish National Research Council and was assistant lecturer at the Department of Computing and Automation at Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1976 to 1978. She became part of the Department of Computing at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1978 as an assistant lecturer and later as a full lecturer. In 1992 she became professor in Architecture and Computer Technology.

Ana Ripoll has worked in several areas of research within the field of Computer Architecture and Parallel Processing. She actively worked in the creation of the research groups Static Assignation of Programs, Dynamic Balance of Force, Parallel Program and Performance Prediction Models, and Distribution Systems for Video-on-Demand Applications. She has published over a hundred articles in specialised journals and for international conferences, and has directed eight doctoral theses. She also participated in several state-funded national and international research projects and worked as a consultant and advisor for different public institutions. Dr Ripoll has also worked as a projects evaluator for the ANEP (National Evaluation and Foresight Agency), she has participated in European Cooperation Projects and is currently the president of the association Bioinformatics Barcelona (BIB).
