Mercedes Unzeta, emeritus professor of the UAB Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was elected one of the top 10 women academics by the Mujeres&Compañia ranking "Las Top 100 mujeres líderes en España".

The digital platform, directed by Argentinian journalist Mercedes Wullich and with a selection board of 50 experts, each year chooses 100 women from 10 different areas. The ranking “Las Top 100 mujeres líderes en España” has already published four editions with the aim of giving visibility to women and making them leaders, helping them to have a say in debates and in strategic political, economic and social agendas. The award was announced on Thursday 23 June at the awards ceremony which was held in the auditorium of the Campus Repsol in Madrid.

Mercedes Unzeta is director of a research group at the UAB Institute of Neurosciences specialising in the study of oxidative stress and its relation to neurodegenerative diseases. She holds a PhD in Chemistry and her research is focused on the concept of neurovascular unit and its relation to Alzheimer's disease. She has published over 80 articles in international journals and has five approved patents. She has also participated in several research projects funded by the European Union.
