Official Master's Degree in Erasmus Mundus in Crossing the Mediterranean: Towards Investment and Integration
(Last edition academic year 2017-2018)
The master's degree Crossing the Mediterranean: Towards Investment and Integration is a two-year study programme (120 ECTS credits) delivered jointly by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Ca 'Foscari University, Venice and Paul-Valéry University, Montpellier. The degree provides professional competences in the fields of mediation, communication, cooperation and Mediterranean integration, along with the methodological tools to move into research.
Europe needs to integrate the Mediterranean coastal areas, so as to transfer and exchange knowledge, develop cultural and commercial exchanges, foster consensus on processes of democratisation, and establish friendly relations between areas that are currently in conflict, by reinforcing the presence of the EU in these contexts. The questions of immigration and cultural and social diversity, along with economic integration, have become a matter of urgency in the Euro-Mediterranean region as a whole. The challenge is to form a new generation of specialists, qualified professionals and researchers able to understand all the different scenarios present in this area, contribute new content, practices, and ideas, and set up networks between academic actors, political leaders, industrial operators and journalists, among others.
It is crucial for civil society to participate/cooperate in this educational process, so this master's degree has sought the involvement of a series of affiliated institutions, including Sousse University, Tunisia, Moulay Ismail University, Morocco, Strasbourg University, France and other institutions in Israel, Egypt and Spain: Anna Lindh Foundation, Centre de Recherche Français, Jerusalem, Centre of International Affairs, Barcelona, Institut Europeu de la Mediterrània, Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo foundation and Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée.
The master's degree is divided into six terms: three teaching modules (one in each university), a period of complementary studies, a placement period and a period of preparation work on the dissertation. The mobility pattern is basically closed: all students must attend the same modules, but there is a certain degree of flexibility regarding the complementary studies and the placement location. The first period (Module 1, September-December) takes place at the UAB, the second period (Module 2, January-March) at Ca’Foscari-Venice, the third period (complementary studies, April-June), at either Meknès, Sousse or Strasbourg, and the fourth term (Module 3, September-January), at UPV-Montpellier. The fifth period (February-April/May) is for the placement, which will take place at the affiliated non-academic institutions. The last period is for preparation work on the master's degree dissertation (April / May-August).
