Master description
The first semester is made up of 30 ECTS which are offered to all students enrolled in the master's degree at the UAB. In this semester students are able to interact directly with the whole group and, at the same time get to know the other centres associated to the project. This first semester also includes an initiation period in which students can become familiar with the different aspects of the master's degree and express any specific needs or interests which they would like to see integrated into the programme. For example, seminars will be organised to strengthen students' skills in English, in study and academic writing techniques, as well as workshops related to cultural adaptations in different contexts.The second semester begins with a compulsory online course (UAB) on social research techniques which will help create the framework for the students' master theses. In addition, the second semester includes several optional modules at the University of Oslo and the University of Amsterdam, where students can better contextualise the subjects offered in the first semester. This semester also reflects the substantive interests and expert knowledge of the universities participating in the project, as well as the specialised knowledge existing in the different regions of the Global South. The semester will end with the Summer School, organised by the University of Malta, which once again brings together all students. The Summer School will be made up of conferences by professors from the associated centres and universities, from different countries of the South. It will also offer training for students to succeed in their work placements, fieldwork and master thesis, all taking place in the following semesters.
At the beginning of the second year, all students must enrol in their third semester at the University of Oslo, and then decide if they wish to go on to enrol at the UAB, the University of Malta or stay at the University of Oslo for their fourth semester. All participating associations will be able to supervise these tasks, although IIEP-UNESCO will take on the main coordination responsibilities of work placements and fieldworks.
Students will enrol in a 15 ECTS work placement module, in which they will have the chance to observe the connections between the theoretical training they receive in the classroom and the reality of working directly on educational development projects. That is why they will obliged to maintain a diary with reflections on what they experience. The diary will be evaluated by one of the professionals from the associated centres. Together with the professionals from the places in which students will carry out their work placements, professionals from the associated centres will work with students to make sure they have everything they need.
Included in their work placements, students will enrol in a 15 ECTS fieldwork module which will help them later write up their master thesis. These two activities can be combined if the data collected is from the same place where the work placement is carried out. In any case, the directives of both the work placement and fieldwork must have a detailed and rigorous structure which follows the manuals specifying the required academic and professional standards.
At the beginning of the fourth semester, students will return to the university in which they initially enrolled. The last semester will be dedicated mainly to the writing of the master thesis under the supervision of one or two of the professionals from the university or participating centres. Given that the master's degree aims to train professionals who can work and further research into the field of development education, during the last semester students will need to prepare an academic article or technical report on the characteristics of education policies. All activities in this last phase are included in a 30 ECTS module. Students will receive an orientation manual for the module.
